Romance Tropes — Love It, Like It, or I’ll Read It Anyway π
If there’s one thing romance readers have opinions about, it’s tropes.
Tell me a book is enemies-to-lovers and you already have my attention. Tell me there’s an accidental pregnancy? Well... you might have to work a little harder to convince me. π
Over time, I’ve definitely figured out which tropes will make me immediately add a book to my TBR, which ones I usually enjoy, and which ones make me hesitate before turning that first page.
So, in true Romance in the Coffee Rings fashion, grab your coffee and let’s talk romance tropes. ☕π
❤️ LOVE IT — Just Give Me the Book
⚔️ Enemies to Lovers
The tension. The banter. The “I absolutely cannot stand you... so why can't I stop thinking about you?” energy.
Enemies-to-lovers is easily one of my favorite romance tropes. I love watching that tension slowly turn into something neither character expected.
π₯ Second Chance Romance
There’s just something about two people finding their way back to each other.
Give me the history, the unresolved feelings, the what could have been, and that moment when they realize maybe their story wasn't actually over. I'm in.
π Grumpy x Sunshine
One person is basically ☀️✨π and the other would prefer everyone leave them alone.
Naturally, I love it.
Especially when the grumpy one secretly has the biggest soft spot for their sunshine.
π° Billionaire Romance
Is it realistic? That's not why I'm here. π
Give me the ridiculously successful love interest, the glamorous settings, the grand gestures and all the escapism. Sometimes I just want my romance with a completely unreasonable bank account.
π LIKE IT — Usually a Good Time
π Fake Dating
We all know where this is going.
They know where this is going.
Apparently, the only people who DON'T know where this is going are the two people fake dating.
And I will happily read it anyway.
π§π€π§ Brother/Sister's Best Friend
The history makes this one for me.
They've usually known each other forever, someone is inevitably going to say “we shouldn't be doing this,” and there's almost always a moment where they have to figure out how they're going to tell the sibling.
I'm listening. π
π Sports Romance
At this point, put an athlete on the page and there's a pretty good chance I'll give the book a shot.
I especially love when the sports world actually feels like part of the story instead of just being there to give the love interest a jersey.
π Marriage of Convenience
Two people getting married while insisting they're definitely NOT going to fall in love?
Sure.
I believe you.
Absolutely.

π¬ I'LL READ IT... BUT YOU HAVE TO CONVINCE ME
π§π« Student/Teacher or Professor
This one is definitely harder for me to get into.
The dynamic has to be handled REALLY well for me to enjoy it. It's not an automatic DNF, but it's also never going to be the trope that makes me pick up a book.
π Age Gap
This depends heavily on the characters and how big the age gap actually is.
If the relationship feels balanced and the chemistry works, I can enjoy it. But the trope itself isn't something that makes me immediately excited about a book.
πΆ Accidental Pregnancy
I'll read it...
But I'm probably not picking up the book because of it.
If I'm already invested in the characters and their relationship, it can work for me. Otherwise, this is one of those tropes that usually makes me hesitate.
π Love Triangle
THIS ONE DEPENDS.
A good love triangle can have me completely invested, choosing teams and questioning every decision.
A bad one can have me yelling:
JUST PICK SOMEONE.
There is very little in-between. π
☕ Final Sip
That's the funny thing about romance tropes: the exact trope that makes one reader immediately hit “add to cart” can make another put the book right back down.
For me, give me the enemies, the second chances, the grumpy ones secretly falling for their sunshine, and apparently... the billionaires. π
But even the tropes I don't normally love aren't automatic dealbreakers. The right characters and the right story can still completely change my mind.
Now I want to know yours:
What romance trope will make you INSTANTLY pick up a book—and which one makes you think twice? ππ
Until next time, keep turning pages and sipping something good. ☕π
